While one of the most-talked about events from NHK’s 66th Kohaku Uta Gassen (New Years Eve Red vs. White Battle) was about AKB48’s Takahashi Minami’s final performance at Kohaku but also being joined on stage by former members Maeda Atsuko and Oshima Yuko and Love Live’s μ’s.

Unfortunately, viewership tumbled to 39.2%, the lowest of the song festival’s 65-year history.

While the highest rating was 81.4% back in 1963, with more competition from other channels, satellite, online and video gaming, and at this time, there are no ways to tabulate those who have watched on their cell phone.

But this is the state of Japanese television and ratings are not the same as they used to be.
