AKB48’s Anna Iriyama returns onstage after handshake incident


AKB48 member Iriyama Anna (18) returned onstage at the AKB48 Theater after the knifing incident in which she and AKB48 member Kawaei Rina along with an event staff member were injured by a man who was trying to kill the members with a handsaw.


Iriyama was seen with her cast on her right arm.  But she took part in the announcement of AKB48 having their next handshake meeting on June 5th and both she and Kawaei Rina will take part in the event.

With more than 200 members set to participate, baggage inspection is to take place, along with body checks with metal detectors.

With heavy security implemented, AKB48 rival group Nogizaka 46 used the same type of security for their handshake event on June 21st.

Iriyama Anna makes surprise call on All Night Nippon


Iriyama Anna made a surprise phone call on Nippon Broadcasting’s “All Night Nippon”.

The program which is hosted by Yokoyama Yui, Matsui Sakiko and Shimada Haruka featured an upbeat Iriyama.  Iriyama told the listeners that she apologized for having many people worry for her.  Iriyama added that she wants to do her best when she returns and wants to meet everyone soon.

The cast told Iriyama that they wanted to hear her cheerful voice and Iriyama told them that she was happy to appear on the show.

Earlier in the day, Kawaei Rina made a call appearance on Fuji TV’s “Viking”.


All AKB48 appearances and events will be suspended temporarily, AKB48 Theater closed until May 31st


Due to the AKB48 attack which left members Kawaei Rina and Iriyama Anna plus a staff member injured, AKB48 Theater will be closed through the 31st. King Records also wants to put all handshake events off until they thoroughly address security concerns and make sure this incident does not happen again. TV appearances and also events are suspended for the time being.

Iriyama and Kawaei released from the hospital


AKB48 members Iriyama Anna (18) and Kawaei Rina (19) were released from the hospital, a day after they were attacked by a crazed unemployed man named Satoru Umeta who admitted to police that he was not a fan and wanted to randomly murder someone. Umeta has been charged for attempted murder.

Kawaei briefly talked with reporters to say, “We’ve caused you worry, but we are returning to Tokyo now”.

On May 25th at the handshake meeting in Iwate (at Iwate Inudstrial Culture Center), Kawae Rina, Iriyama Anna and a venue staff member were injured by an attack by a man holding a hand saw.

The injuries were not life threatening but the event has been canceled.  More information coming soon.

UPDATE: Kawaei suffered a fractured thumb and cut on her right hand.  Iriyama suffered a fracture on  her right pinky and a cut on her right arm and a head laceration.  A staff member was cut in his right arm.

The 24-year-old man has been arrested and charged for attempted murder.  The man is from Towada and is unemployed according to NTV.

This was the first time a Japanese performer was attacked during a handshake meeting.

Other incidents including attacks on performers have happened in the past.

In 1957, a crazed fan of Hibari Misora threw hydrochloric acid on the singer at Asakusa International Theater.

In 1963, a crazed fan of Yoshinaga Sayuri broke into the home of the actress carrying a pistol.  The man said he wanted to tattoo his name on the Sayuri’s arm or leg.  The man shot a police officer that was pursuing him.  At the time, Sayuri and her family were away from home.

In 1983, a mentally ill man attacked Matsuda Seiko with a metal pipe during a performance in front of 6,000 people Osaka.  Matsuda fainted during the attack and was taken to the hospital immediately for her head injury.

In 2002, Johnny’s Jr. member Yamashita Tomohisa was attacked by a man who poured liquid on him and the man ingested a liquid.

In 2013, Ninety-Nine member Okamura Takashi was pelted and inured by a bottle thrown at his forehead during an appearance in Kobe.
